Mountain Hawks drop 4-0 final to Sacred Heart
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sacred Heart scored an early goal and wouldn’t look back as the Pioneers downed the Lehigh field hockey team, 4-0, on Friday evening. The Mountain Hawks held an 18-16 edge in shots, but couldn’t convert as Sacred Heart goalie Mary Altepeter made 10 saves to stifle Lehigh’s attack. The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back on Sunday vs. Monmouth in their final tuneup before Patriot League play.
Sacred Heart took a quick lead just 4:47 into the game when Lindsay Kasten took a feed from Sarah Bergman in front of the cage and beat Lehigh sophomore goalie Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson. The Pioneers doubled their lead less than eight minutes later off their first penalty corner of the game.
Melinday Feyko made it 3-0 just before halftime, taking a feed from Karly Duven and sliding a shot just inside the far post at 27:11.
Sacred Heart made it 4-0 early in the second half as Liz Bergman was sprung the other way and found Duven who found the open cage at 38:35.
Neither team scored the rest of the way, but not for a lack of chances. Lehigh held an 11-6 edge in second-half shots, but couldn’t solve Altepeter. That included four shots on goal in the final two minutes, including two by senior Brittany Johnson, but Altepeter was there every time to preserve the shutout.
Final shots were 18-16 in favor of Lehigh while penalty corners were even at seven apiece. Altepeter finished with 10 saves while Maltinsky-Wilson and freshman Sophie Fitzpatrick combined for seven, and junior Marie Mignogna made a defensive save.
