PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team began its spring season on Saturday with a solid all-around showing at the Murphy Cup. The Mountain Hawks saw one boat finish third while five others placed fourth in a wide range of events.

“Considering it was our first race of the spring, we put forth our best effort that we could,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “We made some mistakes, but I know we’ll work on fixing them for the next race.”

Lehigh’s top finish was in the Men’s Freshmen Eight as the squad came in third with a time of 6:41.22. The Mountain Hawks also placed fourth in five other races – Women’s Freshmen Four (8:54.69), Men’s Freshmen Four (7:59.37), Men’s Varsity Two (8:24.35), Women’s Varsity Eight (6:57.66) and Men’s Varsity Eight (6:24.01).

The men’s duo of sophomore Christopher Hall and freshman Anthony Palacio did race in the finals of the Men’s Varsity Pair, where they posted a time of 8:11.39.

“Overall, each boat was able to execute the race plan, which is a positive,” said Conley. “That will be a key component when we go to race in our championships at the end of the season.

“Despite what the results were, we were competitive in the boats that were out there,” he continued. “It shows that we can compete. Considering it was our first race [of the spring], it was a good first showing.”
