Mountain Hawks sweep Coppin State with 9-2 victory
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team (7-5) defeated the Coppin State Eagles on Sunday afternoon with a 9-2 victory. Lehigh completes the thee-game sweep of the Eagles for the weekend after strong pitching performances and timely hitting on Sunday.
Lehigh had a great pitching performance from its starter, Jordan Warncke. Warncke tossed four innings of four-hit ball to earn the victory. Additionally, he struck out five batters and gave up just one run. In relief, Colin Gotzin, Thomas O’Malley and Brandon Sady combined for five innings of one run ball to secure the 9-2 win for the Mountain Hawks.
As a team, Lehigh collected 10 hits in the victory, including two hits each coming from Billy Goldman and Kevin Mihalik. Logan Winchester collected one hit to go along with two RBI. Fresman catcher Joe Abeln had a strong game, scoring two runs and driving in two.
Lehigh was the first team to strike in the fifth inning. Mihalik led off the inning with a base hit and would then score on Billy Goldman’s base hit to right field. A base-hit bunt by Brandon Pifer later in the inning would load the bases for the Mountain Hawks. Abeln then walked, which scored a run and gave the Brown and White a 2-0 lead. Lehigh would score another two runs on pass balls and then Logan Winchester capped off the five run inning with an RBI single.
The Mountain Hawks upped their lead to 6-0 in the third inning when Austin Borden singled in Mihalik. Coppin State responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 6-1. Lehigh answered back though in the top of the fourth when Brendan McGaheran scored on an error after he singled earlier in the inning. Winchester and Abeln would add on runs with RBI’s in the eighth and ninth inning to give the Mountain Hawks a 9-2 lead.
Lehigh will be back in action on Wednesday with a mid-week matchup at Villanova. The Mountain Hawks return back home next weekend with a four-game series with Iona.
