WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lehigh continued its fall season at the three-day Eastern Tennis Championships hosted by Army Friday through Sunday. All eight Mountain Hawks saw action on the weekend with lots of doubles and singles matches played on Friday and Saturday, followed by championship finals and two draws of one-on-one doubles on Sunday.
Junior Liz Piscitelli and freshman Jill Sloand represented Lehigh in the flight A doubles bracket. The Mountain Hawk duo won their first match over a team from Saint Peter’s before being knocked out 8-4 by a team from Long Island. Piscitelli and Sloand came back and played in the Lichtenberg doubles bracket on Saturday, falling to a team from Pittsburgh 8-3.
Sophomore Abbey Perl and freshman Kathleen Larkin played at flight B doubles, going 2-3 on the weekend. After losing their opening match, the Lehigh duo won their first consolation match over a team from Sacred Heart but was then eliminated from the consolations by a team from the host Black Knights. Larkin and Perl then moved to the effort doubles bracket where they won their first match before defaulting out.
After a strong showing at the Stony Brook Invitational, freshman Taylor Hampshire represented Lehigh at flight A singles, but dropped her first two matches. Hampshire then played in the Survival Singles Alpha bracket, falling to Lana Juste of NJIT 8-5.
Freshman Jenai Bilimoria and sophomore Patricia Muething suffered slightly better fates, winning their first round matches at flight B and C singles respectively. Bilimoria downed Nikki Kuna of Bowdoin 6-2, 6-3 in the first round before falling to Della Taylor of Army. Muething downed Lennea Enoh-Janssen of Saint Peter’s before a second round loss to Candyce Boney of UMass. Muething did bounce back to win a match in the honor singles bracket before defaulting out.
Lehigh’s lone senior, Kiera Murasko-Blank, competed at flight D singles but dropped three matches on the weekend.
Sunday featured two brackets of a new one-on-one doubles format. Perl and Bilimoria picked up wins for the Brown and White on the tournament’s final day.
The Mountain Hawks will now head home to resume fall play on October 16 when they host the Lehigh Fall Tennis Championships on the Goodman Campus.
