STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Lehigh opened its fall season at the Stony Brook Invitational, which wrapped up on Sunday. Four Mountain Hawks made their collegiate debuts and three of those Lehigh freshmen picked up a win on the weekend. As a team Lehigh won one doubles match and two singles matches.
The invitational began with doubles action on Friday. Leading the way for Lehigh was the team of freshman Abbey Perl and Jill Sloand, who picked up an 8-1 win over a team from Bryant in their first match at Flight B doubles. Perl and Sloand then were eliminated by a duo from NJIT. The Mountain Hawks other doubles teams included sophomore Patricia Muething and freshman Taylor Hampshire and junior Liz Piscitelli and freshman Jenai Bilimoria at Flight A doubles, and senior Kiera Murasko-Blank and freshman Kathleen Larkin at Flight B doubles.
In singles play on Saturday freshmen Hampshire and Larkin picked up singles wins for the Brown and White. Hampshire downed Stephanie Smyers of Bryant 9-8 before falling to Ivana Tomaic of Radford 8-2 in the quarterfinals at B singles. At D singles Larkin downed Joanna Macaluso of Marist 8-0 before being edged 9-8 by Megan Guidry of NJIT. The rest of Lehigh’s singles roster saw Piscitelli and Muething participate at A singles, Bilimoria at B singles, Murasko-Blank and Perl at C singles and Sloand at D singles.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their fall schedule next weekend at the Eastern Tennis Championships at West Point, N.Y.
