Women's XC takes second at Lehigh Invitational
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s cross country team started the 2010 season off on the right foot, placing second at the Lehigh Invitational on Friday night at the Goodman Campus Course. Lehigh placed three runners in the top 10, including junior Katherine Pierce, who finished second overall with a time of 22:31.8.
“Coming in, we set up a couple of distinct packs,” women’s coach Debbie Utesch explained. “Katherine Pierce was charged with pacing the second pack, so we actually held her back over the first 4,000 meters. She closed really fast over the last 2K.”
Senior Andrea Mascaro completed the race in 22:41.6 and finished in sixth place. Senior Kaitlin Grimm also posted an impressive finish with a time of 22:53.5, good enough for 10th, while the trio of Carolyn Morse, Katherine Howley and Alexis Weiner placed 13th, 14th and 15th, respectively. Freshman Hannah Pierce gave Lehigh its seventh top-20 finisher as she crossed the line in 18th.
“Our goal was to have our top five runners finish under a minute apart,” Utesch said. ”We accomplished that today.”
The women’s team recorded a score of 45 for the meet, finishing just eight points higher than Navy. Lafayette took third in the meet, Kutztown placed fourth, Rider took fifth, DeSales finished sixth, Muhlenberg placed seventh and Moravian and Cedar Crest took eighth and ninth, respectively.
Sophomores Samantha Andersen and Victoria Berard also ran impressive races, finishing 25th and 26th, respectively. Junior Megan Hetzel took 32nd, sophomore Lauren Pietrosh crossed the line in 40th and freshman Jessica Kendzor placed two spots back in 42nd. Sophomore Lisa Glover (47th) and freshman Peggy Lai (48th) gave Lehigh 14 top-50 finishers in the meet.
The Mountain Hawks will be back in action on September 18 at the Iona Meet of Champs in the Bronx, N.Y. The women’s race is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m. from the historic Van Cortlandt Park Course.
