PLANT CITY, Fla. – Lehigh wrapped up competition at the Plant City tournament with a pair of tightly contested losses to Big Ten member Michigan State on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Tiffany Curtis tossed nine strong innings in game one, but the Spartans prevailed 2-1, before winning the nightcap by a 2-0 score. The Mountain Hawks fall to 2-7 on the season with the losses, and wrap up play in Plant City with a 2-2 record.
Michigan State (7-6) took an early lead in the opener as first baseman Dayne Feenstra smacked her first home run of the season in the second inning, one of the few mistakes made by Curtis on the day.
The Mountain Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single from junior centerfielder Kate Marvel.
The game headed to extra innings deadlocked at one. Feenstra doubled with two outs in the ninth inning, and later came around to score on a Lehigh throwing error.
Curtis threw all nine innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out nine. The freshman righthander falls to 1-3 on the season.
In game two, the Spartans scored both their runs in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout. Lehigh had several scoring opportunities throughout the game, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to capitalize as Megan Hair and Lesley Noel kept the Brown and White off the scoreboard.
Sophomore Lisa Sweeney (1-3) suffered the loss in the pitchers circle allowing two runs in four innings, before giving way to senior Stefanie Forlenza, who tossed two scoreless frames.
The Mountain Hawks will next head to Kissimmee, Florida to play eight games in four days at the Rebel Spring Games. Lehigh will take Monday off, and will meet Western Carolina Tuesday at 9:00 am before taking on Detroit at 3:00 pm.
