Lehigh wraps up fall season at ITA Regional

Posted: October 24, 2006

PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh wrapped up the fall tennis season this past weekend, as senior captains, Ryan Lloyd and Alfredo Fernandez-Concha represented the Mountain Hawks at the ITA Division I East Region Championships, hosted by Penn. The event served as a qualifier for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which will take place in Columbus, Ohio beginning November 2.

Playing against the top competition in the region, Lloyd and Fernandez-Concha were unable to pick up wins in the event, as each Mountain Hawk went 0-2 in singles play, while teaming up to lose their only doubles match.

Fernandez-Concha was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Ira Reibesen of Bucknell in his opening round match. In his consolation round match, Fernandez-Concha lost in a third set tiebreak to Yules Hadisboro of Buffalo 5-7, 6-1, 10-7. Lloyd dropped his first match, and then lost his consolation to Moshe Levy of Binghamton. In doubles play, the Lehigh duo lost 8-1 to Dartmouth’s Dan Freeman and Dave Waslen.

Virginia Tech’s Arvid Puranen won the singles title, over Columbia’s Jared Drucker. Brown’s Basutev Ratnam and Eric Thomas took home the doubles crown.

Overall, there were plenty of positives throughout the fall for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks also competed in the Cornell Fall Invite, and hosted the Lehigh Tennis Invitational and the ECAC Championships, in which the Brown and White placed second. Lloyd led Lehigh with six singles wins, with Fernandez-Concha going 5-5 in singles play. Junior Brent Herbert and sophomore Jon-Michael Caminiti won four singles matches apiece. All four of Lehigh’s doubles teams posted winning records in the fall, with Lloyd and Fernandez-Concha going 4-3.

The Mountain Hawks will open the spring season on Saturday, January 20 when they travel to Providence, R.I. for a tri-meet with Brown and Boston College.
