BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Kristen Dalton scored a team-high 11 points—her most since scoring 11 against NJIT on December 9—but the Mountain Hawks saw their two-game winning streak at Stabler Arena come to an end on Tuesday night as Navy defeated Lehigh 59-46. It is the second-straight season in which the Mountain Hawks have dropped both regular season games to the Mids—the first time Lehigh got swept by Navy in back-to-back seasons since the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons. The Mountain Hawks now fall to 8-15 overall and 3-6 in league play, while Navy improves to 10-13 and 4-5.
The Midshipmen jumped out to an early six point lead, which would be the largest gap between Lehigh and Navy in the first half, off a lay-up by Carly Meyer as Navy led 8-2 at the 17:11 mark. Over a span lasting less than a minute, Dalton and Navy’s Betsy Burnett traded points two times as Dalton pulled Lehigh to within four and Burnett increased the Mids’ lead to six two times.
Lehigh cut into Navy’s lead and eventually took a 15-14 lead off Ryan Ingalls’ lay-up at 11:52. Navy regained its lead after an Emily Cordle jumper at 11:29. However, both teams would remain scoreless for the next 2:50, missing a combined total of eight shots until sophomore Melissa Rich made a lay-up at 8:29 to give Lehigh a 17-16 advantage. The Mountain Hawks would increase their lead to three off a basket by Dalton 50 seconds later.
Trailing 23-20, Navy’s Kalen Kropa swished a three-pointer at 5:41 to tie the score. Burnett hit a jumper at 3:58 left in the first half to give Navy the 25-23 lead. The Mids would get five more points before the end of the half in order to enter halftime with a 30-26 lead.
Navy continued to increase its lead in the second half, eventually building another six-point lead before Lehigh would come to within two off a lay-up by senior Sara Ellis at 14:42 to make the score 34-32. However, that would be the closest Lehigh would get as the Mids continued to widen the gap. Navy eventually took a ten point lead off a three-pointer by Meyer at 5:36 to take a 53-43 lead. Ellis sank two foul shots to cut the Mountain Hawks’ deficit to eight, but the Mids outscored Lehigh 6-1 in the last 4:38 to secure the win.
Burnett scored a game-high 16 points, going 8-for-10 from the field, while Kropa dished off a game-high eight assists. Meanwhile, Meyer was 4-for-7 from beyond the arc en route to scoring 14 points and she handed out four assists.
Ellis grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and dished off a team-high four assists.
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when the Black Knights of Army visit Bethlehem. Game time is set for 5:05 pm from Stabler Arena. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 610-7LU-GAME, logging onto lehighsports.com, or prior to tip-off at the Stabler Arena box office on game day.
