NEWARK, N.J – Lehigh’s sharp shooting on Saturday afternoon gave the Mountain Hawks’ their first road win since November 12 as the Mountain Hawks defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders 70-44 at the Fleisher Center. The win also marked the first back-to-back wins for the Mountain Hawks of the 2006-07 season. Senior Adrienne Blount and sophomore Melissa Rich each recorded double-doubles for the Mountain Hawks as all five starters reached double-figures in points.
Lehigh went on an 11-0 scoring run in the opening minutes to build an 11-2 lead just 3:03 into the game. The Mountain Hawks’ sharp shooting in the first half would only allow the Mountain Hawks to build an even greater lead as seven Mountain Hawks tallied at least one first half field goal. Lehigh was 15-for-29 from the field, shooting 51.7 percent. The Mountain Hawks would enter halftime with a 17 point lead, their largest halftime lead of the season, as Lehigh carried a 40-23 lead.
The Mountain Hawks would continue to build their lead as the Brown and White sank 30 second half points.
NJIT was held to just an 18.8 shooting percentage from three-point range throughout the entire game, not sinking their first trey until 9:38 remaining in the game.
Senior Sara Ellis, freshman Kristen Dalton and Rich each had 11 points for the Mountain Hawks, while freshman Alex Ross and Blount each had ten. Blount and Rich were the game’s only players to reach double-figures in rebounds as they pulled down 12 and ten rebounds, respectively.
Jill Dickinson led the Highlanders with 12 points.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on December 22 when the Brown and White travel to Raleigh, N.C. to face the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Game time is set for 1:00 pm from Reynolds Coliseum. Live audio of the game will be broadcast in the Lehigh Valley on WLVR-FM as well as worldwide online at lehighsports.com with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports.
