Lehigh splits on Sunday; wins series from Colgate

Posted: April 4, 2010

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After playing two one-run games on Saturday, Lehigh and Colgate battled in two more one-run contests Sunday afternoon at Kaufman Field. Sophomore Audra Wood’s three-run triple keyed a four-run sixth inning as the Mountain Hawks won game one 5-4. The Raiders avoided a Lehigh sweep however as Stephanie Hartquist delivered a game-winning sacrifice fly to lead Colgate to a 2-1 win in the nightcap. By taking three of the four games in the series, Lehigh improves to 17-9 overall and 3-1 in the Patriot League, while Colgate is now 18-8.

Under a new Patriot League rule for the 2010 season, Lehigh was the designated visiting team for both games on its home field. The Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one as junior Carly Potock reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a single by senior Lauren Eichblatt.

Colgate took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Emmie Dolfi and then tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two-run home run by Jen Ortega.

Lehigh mounted a two-out rally to take the lead in the sixth as Michelle Hollebeke walked Potock and Eichblatt and then gave up a single to freshman Rosie Roessel to load the bases. Wood cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line that tied the game at four. The next batter, junior Alex Cueva, singled up the middle to score Wood with the go ahead run.

Senior Tiffany Curtis retired the final six batters to wrap up Lehigh’s sixth straight win overall. Curtis allowed four runs on six hits in a complete game effort walking two and striking out five as she improves to 11-4. Hollebeke suffered her third straight loss as she fell to 9-5.

Lehigh out-hit Colgate 8-6 in game one with junior Julie Fernandez leading the way with a 3-for-4 effort.

The Raiders took an early 1-0 lead in game two on a Nicole Siedhof first-inning RBI single, but Lehigh answered with a run in the top of the fifth when Roessel scored on a Courtney O’Connell wild pitch.

In the seventh, Colgate loaded the bases on two singles and a fielder’s choice. Lehigh erased the lead run at home on a fielder’s choice for the first out, but Hartquist flied out to right field scoring Amanda Zranchev with the winning run.

O’Connell earned the win for Colgate allowing a run on three hits in three innings in relief of Lacy Ver Steeg who went the first four innings. Freshman Rebecca Bliss pitched well for Lehigh allowing just two runs on seven hits, but took the loss, falling to 3-3.

Roessel went 3-for-3 in the nightcap for Lehigh, but Colgate out-hit the Mountain Hawks 7-6 in game two.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Rider for a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m. from Lawrenceville, N.J.
