BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh jumped out to a 9-1 halftime lead on Le Moyne and held off a second half rally as the Mountain Hawks downed the Dolphins 14-8 at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Kelly Draper and junior Lauren Dykstra scored four goal apiece, while senior Inneke Carmola handed out three assists as Lehigh remains unbeaten at 4-0 on the season. Three Dolphins scored two goals in the game as the visitors fall to 0-3 following the loss.
“I thought we came out with good focus and executed well in the first half,” Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern said afterwards. “In the second half we were not as sharp though. I thought we lost our focus.”
Lehigh out shot Le Moyne 30-25 on the day led by Dykstra with nine attempts and Draper with eight, while Draper was the team leader in draw controls with four and in ground balls with eight. The Mountain Hawks scooped up 27 ground balls to Le Moyne’s 19 and won 12 draw controls on the afternoon. Lehigh was seven-of-14 on free position shots with Kindall Healy scoring on both of her attempts. Freshman ML DiNisco got the start in goal for the Brown and White and stopped nine shots, while senior Kelsy Ferris made three saves in 19 minutes of action. “I thought ML had an excellent first half,” Redfern said. “She performed very well in her first start.” She continued, “And Kelly Draper played well for us. She did a very nice job today.”
Rebekah Elmer took five shots on the day for Le Moyne, while Brittany Brigandi was credited with four. Elmer and Katlin Wallace led the Dolphins with four ground balls apiece and Wallace was the team leader in draw controls with four. Le Moyne did not record any assists on the day and Kelly Fucillo stopped nine shots in goal for the visitors.
Lehigh wasted little time in jumping all over the Dolphins as the Mountain Hawks scored the game’s first seven goals in a span of 11 minutes. Dykstra, Draper and Anna Patterson scored two goals apiece during the run, while junior Allison Thomas added the other score. Mia Valletta got the Dolphins on the board for the first time with her goal at the 8:49 mark but Dykstra and Draper answered with back-to-back goals for the Brown and White as Lehigh took a 9-1 lead into halftime.
Healy scored the first goal of the second half four minutes in to give the Mountain Hawks a nine-goal advantage but Le Moyne scored the next two goals to pull within 10-3. Healy responded with her third goal of the season to make it an 11-3 game but the Dolphins responded yet again, this time with three straight scores capped by Valletta’s goal with 11:41 to play making the score 11-6.
Carmola stopped the Le Moyne run with a goal at the 10:12 mark and Dykstra’s free position goal with 9:32 to play gave the Mountain Hawks a 13-6 lead. Brittany Brigandi scored back-to-back goals for the Dolphins to bring the visitors within five, but Draper found the back of the net with three ticks on the clock to seal the win for the Brown and White.
Lehigh returns to action on Friday evening when the Mountain Hawks open their 2010 Patriot League schedule in Lewisburg versus the Bucknell Bison. The opening draw control is set for 7:00.
“We need to work on learning how to play two full halves,” Redfern said in reference to Friday’s game versus the Bison.
