WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lehigh volleyball team fell 3-0 in a hard fought match with the American Eagles Friday night. American took the match in straight sets 25-11, 25-16, 25-21 and after falling to the Brown and White earlier in the season was able to even the series. With the loss the Mountain Hawks drop to 10-13 on the season and 3-5 in the Patriot League.
“Overall I was pleased with our performance and we played a solid match,” head coach Jenny Maurer said. “American came back tonight and was a different team, they sided out extremely well.”
Lehigh started off a little slow in the first set as the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead and American wouldn’t falter the lead for the rest of the set.
The Mountain Hawks started off the second set very strong taking a 5-0 lead, but American battled back to even the score at five. With the score tied at 12 the Eagles were able to take control and close out the set.
Lehigh played its best set of the night as they were within one point late in the third. American was able to finish however, and end the match.
“We stepped up our serving from set to set,” Maurer said. We made some adjustments after the second, but American really played a clean match.”
Sophomore Chelsea Sheridan finished with six kills and had an impressive .364 hitting percentage for the Brown and White. Classmate Emily Flanagan had another strong match up front with four blocks.
“Chelsea was very effective offensively tonight,” Maurer said. “Emily stepped up and had some key blocks.”
With six league matches left the Mountain Hawks still have time to get back on the winning track.
“We have to take it game by game,” Maurer said. “We know that nothing is given and it has to be earned. We have to come out and play.”
Lehigh will get right back on the court tomorrow at noon as it takes on Navy.
