Varsity crews compete well in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Lehigh sent its men’s and women’s varsity eight crews to the sunny west coast this weekend to compete in the 35th San Diego Crew Classic.  The Mountain Hawk men won their opening heat on Saturday, crossing in a time of 6:03.14 as they finished in front of Cal-Davis, Notre Dame, Colorado, USC and Sacramento State.  The men competed in the grand finals on Sunday afternoon.  The Lehigh women placed fourth in their respective opening heat, besting Villanova, St. Joseph’s and Arizona State with a time of 6:57.77.  They earned a shot at the petite finals, also on Sunday. 

 

On Sunday, Lehigh’s men placed fifth with a time of 6:15.46 in the grand finals, which placed the Mountain Hawks fifth overall out of 17 entries.  Orange Coast College (Costa Mesa, Calif.) won the men’s collegiate varsity final with a time of 6:01.80, and was followed by UCLA, Minnesota, Cal-Davis, Lehigh and Santa Clara.

 

The women finished sixth in the petite final, and 12th overall out of 20 crews entered, as Cal-Davis placed first overall crossing in a time of 6:48.30.  The University of San Diego, SUNY-Buffalo, Sacramento State and San Diego State rounded out the top-five. 

 

Lehigh is back in action next weekend when the full Mountain Hawks crew travels to Camden, New Jersey to compete in the Knecht Cup.  The two-day event begins on Saturday along the Cooper River at 9:00 AM.
