BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its final tune-up before Patriot League play begins this weekend, Lehigh swept a doubleheader from Penn Tuesday afternoon at Kaufman Field. On a rare day where the wind was blowing out, the Mountain Hawks pounded out ten hits in each game, including four home runs as the Brown and White captured game one 9-2 and then won the nightcap 5-3 in a game that was shortened to six innings because of darkness. With the sweep Lehigh enters league play at 19-4 overall, while Penn falls to 11-7.
Game one was primed as a pitchers duel between Lehigh junior Lisa Sweeney and Penn freshman Jessie Lupardus, both of whom entered the game with 9-1 records and earned run averages under 1.00. The Mountain Hawks struck first, capitalizing on three Penn errors to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Amy Piccinich drove in the first run of the game with an RBI double to left, with senior Megan Conrad later following with an infield single that scored two runs after a Penn error.
Lupardus was replaced by Tory Satagaj to start the third inning and freshman Alex Cueva greeted her rudely with a solo home run to left, the first of her career. Two innings later Cueva led off with her second home run of the game into the trees in left center to put the Mountain Hawks up 5-0.
Christina Khosravi delivered Penn’s only two runs of the opener with a home run to right center in the top of the sixth, but Lehigh answered with four more in the bottom of the frame to put the game away, with the key hit coming from freshman Sam Miller who drilled a pinch-hit two run homer, her second of the season. Junior Kristyn Kubiak added an RBI single in the inning.
Lehigh capitalized on sloppy Penn defense, as the Quakers committed five errors, while Penn pitchers threw three wild pitches.
In the circle, Sweeney allowed just three hits, while walking one and striking out 15 to pick up her tenth victory of the season against just one loss.
Junior Alisha Gonzales led the way for the Brown and White in game two. Gonzales drove in Cueva with an RBI single for the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. The Quakers answered with two runs in the second and another in the third off of sophomore Tiffany Curtis, but Gonzales tied the game in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run to left, her third of the season.
Lehigh took the lead three batters later when freshman Carly Potock delivered an RBI single, which scored Conrad. Two batters after that sophomore Brooke Lewis brought Potock home with a pinch hit single to left field.
Curtis took care of the rest, keeping the Quakers off the scoreboard in the final three frames to earn her eighth win of the season (8-3). Curtis allowed three runs on three hits, while striking out seven and walking two.
The Mountain Hawks will next travel to West Point, N.Y. this weekend to open up Patriot League play against Army. The four game series begins Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Army Softball Complex.
