Offense carries Lehigh to its fifth straight win

BALTIMORE, Md. – Lehigh’s offense exploded for 17 hits and 14 runs, as the Mountain Hawks cruised to their fifth consecutive win with a 14-1 victory over Coppin State Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore. Four different players knocked in multiple runs, led by freshmen Andy Russell and Austin Borden, who each had a game high three. Billy Alec (1-1) picked up his first win of the year, pitching the game’s first two innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out three. The Brown and White improve to 9-6 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 2-11.
Russell picked up his first RBI of the game in the top of the first on a single to right field, plating Brendan McGaheran on the play. The Golden Eagles answered with their only run of the game in the bottom half of the inning, on a single through the left side of the infield by Carlos Russell.
The Mountain Hawks increased their lead to 4-1 in the third inning. Lehigh loaded the bases to start the inning, and Borden drove in two runs on a base hit that landed in front of the right fielder. Later in the inning, Patrick Groome picked up his first RBI of the season on a sac fly to left field, scoring Russell.
Lehigh put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth, with seven runs, led off by Borden with his second homerun of the season. Russell capped off the rally with a two-run homer to left field, the first of his career.
The Brown and White put up three more runs in the top of the ninth, on a single by Joe Ercolano and a two-run single by Joe Bellini.
Six different Mountain Hawks came into relieve Alec, and they allowed only two hits the rest of the way, as the Brown and White picked up its league-leading ninth win of the year.
Lehigh opens its first home series this weekend against George Washington. The teams begin the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
