Age is just a number (1,080 times) for Kelly Gutshall
Someday, the kind folks who set the tees at Indian Valley Country Club in Telford are going to put them in just the right place: Top shelf at the par-4 second hole, precisely where Kelly Gutshall wants.
"I've eagled every hole on the course but No. 2," Gutshall said, laughing. "I think I paid my dues."
As long as he can continue playing, Gutshall gladly will keep paying. When he tees it up today at Indian Valley, his home course, the 86-year-old Gutshall will attempt to shoot his age for the 1,081st time. It's a run that began in 1992, reached a milestone last fall at October and will continue for as long as time allows.
"Other people go to the gym, but I don't do that," he said. "I play golf. And I'm having the time of my life."
Since shooting 68 at age 68, Gutshall has made the number a target score. Last weekend, Gutshall carded scores of 80 and 86 at Indian Valley for rounds 1,079 and 1,080 of shooting his age or better. He has nearly every scorecard from that 181/2-year run, all catalogued in his Springtown home dedicated to his nearly 70 years in the game.
