The Mountain Hawk Mascot

In November 1995, the Lehigh Student Senate and the Department of Athletics jointly introduce Lehigh's first-ever athletics mascot, the Mountain Hawk, and added "Mountain Hawk" as an athletics nickname. At that same time, the university unveiled a new graphic identity to include a primary logo (Lehigh with the Mountain Hawk in the background) and a secondary logo (L-Hawk).

A popular addition to the sidelines of Goodman Stadium and Stabler Arena, the Mountain Hawk also makes numerous appearances at functions around the Lehigh Valley.

Presently, the university refers to all its current athletics teams as Mountain Hawks. To preserve Lehigh's athletics history and tradition, the university continues to use the nicknames "Brown andWhite" and "Engineers" when referring to Lehigh athletics teams of the past, and in particular those teams prior to 1996. It continues to list all three nicknames in its recruiting guides, reflecting the historical nature of the information within, as well as the importance history and tradition plays in recruiting the top student-athletes to Lehigh.

WHAT’S MY NAME?    The Naming Process of the Lehigh Mountain Hawk
Since it’s hatching in November of 1995, the Lehigh mascot has just gone by “The Mountain Hawk.”  Many universities have names for their mascots which have allowed them to create a better identity with their fans.  [Examples: Brutus Buckeye (Ohio St.), Billy the Goat (Navy), YoUDee (Delaware), Will D. Cat (‘Nova), Bucky (Bucknell), and Duke (JMU)].

As the number of appearances which the Mountain Hawk makes grows annually, so does the number of times this question is asked…What is your name?   In response, all the Mountain Hawk has done is shrug his/her shoulders and raise their hands in an I-don’t-know-fashion.  The objective of this naming process is to provide an answer for that question.

The ultimate suggestion list of more than 1,000 names has been narrowed down to the list of 23 semifinalists.  Now you have the opportunity of selecting up to 5 of the remaing names that you feel should move on to the finals.  CLICK HERE to participate in the semifinal round.

The name that is selected will give the mascot a better identity and build a stronger connection with the Lehigh campus community, children, alumni, and fans everywhere.
