The End – April 19, 2009
Well the spring season is coming to a close, but the hard work and training has only begun! Summer workouts, as we all know, are crucial to our individual and team success. I know all the girls are geared up and ready for it though! This spring has been a time of serious improvements and mannnnnn did we see it during our spring tournament at Penn. We played Temple , UPenn, Rider and Army! The freshmen, especially, were jumping higher and moving quicker than ever. It made me miss my days of youth when the area of improvement is SO visible. Now I’m just an old woman sitting on the sidelines with a bum ankle!

Although the past six weeks have personally been a trying time as I deal with this injury, it has helped me realize the value of health! Goodness gracious how I have taken my body for granted! Although physically the spring has posed more obstacles than I had expected, it has brought some personal achievement as the results of something I worked on last fall are coming through. Last year, after being treated for melanoma, I started working with Roseann Corsi on a campus-wide Skin Cancer Awareness Night. The night, which brought in a top melanoma specialist from the area, ultimately led to talks with Joe Sterrett, the Dean of Athletics, and Jack Foley, the head of sports medicine about getting sunscreen available for all outdoor athletes. After working with our dermatologist, Jack was able to order sunscreen fit for athletes, which will arrive this week and be bottled for every team—SO exciting!!! I couldn’t be more thankful for everyone’s help in this initiative. I actually wrote my column about this very topic if you want to take a look, click here.

That is it for now. Tomorrow night is the Student Athlete Formal so I promise to update you on all the fun that the volleyball team has!

The ups and downs of spring – March 19
I hope the luck of the Irish was with everyone this week as you celebrated St. Patty’s day! It has been quite the week for Lehigh Volleyball! We have had a number of recruits in and out of our gym, which has been a lot of fun to meet the prospective players and share a bit about out own personal experience with them. Outside of team practices and lifting, I know the girls have been pretty swamped with work and exams, but as our freshman are probably learning right now, post-spring break is filled with nonstop craziness!

Speaking of Spring Break…I had a WONDERFUL week in San Diego with Mo and a few of our best girl friends. We did a whole lot of n.o.t.h.i.n.g. except for soaking in the beautiful California sun (protected by SPF of course) and perhaps a bit of shopping-- and rollerblading on Mo’s part (apparently she isn’t very good?...I’m sure if I had gone I would have made her look like an all-star!) I know the rest of the girls enjoyed some much needed time off spent at home with family and friends. But, as always, then it is back to the madness!

Last week our team, along with what seemed like every other Lehigh student and athlete, came out to Stabler Arena to watch the women’s basketball team play Lafayette in the Patriot League Championship. I was not with the rest of the team watching and cheering because I had the opportunity to work at the media table for my internship with sports information. It was a heck of a game and such a fabulous thing to have been a part of. They won the championship and will go on this Saturday to play Auburn at Rutgers in the NCAA tournament (at 12:16 p.m.)…doesn’t get much bigger than that! I know Mo and I are planning on going out there Saturday with the Beautiful Barb McReynolds (wife of stud muffin Rob McReynolds) who will be in town for the weekend so it should be a fun day! GO LEHIGH!

Last week, unfortunately, I fell victim to the notorious bad luck of Friday the Thirteenth. At the end of practice I came down on Mo’s foot and pretty much destroyed my ankle. (and it was NOT her fault, just one of those common volleyball things!) I currently have the kankle of a 400lb woman. It is really great! Haha I’ll be out for the next six week with a “severe high ankle sprain” but I just keep reminding myself that there are many worse things in life than crutches and a bum ankle.

Even though I may not be on the court anytime soon, you can be sure I’ll have plenty to update you on next week! Enjoy the spring sunshine.

Pancake Party! – February 27

This week we started team practices! It was great to finally be with the entire team for a practice. We could all feel the improvements we’re making on the court that has resulted from all the hard work and time in individuals and training.

On Wednesday night Coach Refenes had the team over for some special pancakes after practice. She made her mom’s recipe and Jillian’s hotcakes (which are a really healthy version of a pancake made with egg whites, cottage cheese and wheat flour). Needless to say the team devoured them in minutes! It was a fun night of team treats and giggles.

This week we found out some exciting information about our student athlete council! Mo will be the Student Athlete Executive Council President and I will be Co-Chairing the Student Athlete Mentor Program for another year. Exciting news that I think both Mo and I, and the team, were all pretty excited about!

Well it is off to San Diego for me tomorrow for Spring Break! I’ll be meeting Mo there with a few of our other best friends! CANNOT WAIT! It’ll be a nice time of rest and relaxation.

Checking in from the stage – February 18

There is a lovely rain slash snow falling as I write this entry. I’m a little sad that there is snow on the ground again because not only has it been a bit warmer here in Bethlehem, I haven’t had to worry about slipping and falling on my face (which I’ve done at least three times this semester.)

Workouts have been going great. I think all the girls are seeing improvements by now in our lifting and conditioning. Next week we start full team practices. It’ll be nice to be in total volleyball mode again; however we’ll still be continuing our lifting workout over at the Varsity House.

The past few weeks we’ve had a great time staying a few minutes late after open gym and playing with some fans of ours. There are a few workers from Rathbone Dinning Hall who come to many of our home matches during season and are just really great fans. They must love volleyball because now they come and watch us play as a team during open gym nights. We’ve had a great time getting to chat and play with them after practice. It’s the least we can do for two of our most devoted fans.

Last weekend was quite the exciting weekend for me personally. For the past five months I’ve been gearing up and rehearsing for The Vagina Monologues. If you haven’t ever heard of it before, it is a show that goes on across the country, to help raise money and awareness to stop violence against women. Each year there is a different beneficiary for the global movement called V Day, which is when the Vagina Monologues are performed on. This year the beneficiary was the Women of the Congo because there is a huge epidemic of rape and sexual terrorism going on there. You can read my column about it here to know more about the cause. It was an incredible opportunity for me, and one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever been a part of. The entire team came to the show on Sunday, and goodness, their support meant the world to me. And woo did I need it! I had a monologue, which required a deep southern accent and content that wasn’t exactly the easiest, but from what I could tell the girls loved it! Check out the picture—It’s me on stage in the middle of my performance!

New Year's resolution...kind of – February 9

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Ok, I know I’m about 40 days late…but I’m going to need ya’ll to cut me a break…it has been a verrrry busy month up here with the beginning of the spring season!

That being said, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season, and have successfully adhered to their new years resolutions. I don’t blame you if that hasn’t exactly happened given that one of my resolutions was to update this blog regularly starting day one of preseason ( 24 days ago) woopsies!

We started spring semester with our volleyball banquet. It was nice to see all the girls in one place again, which hadn’t really happened since before finals in December. We had a great night of awards, conversation and reflection on the past season. Oh, and cheesecake.

Then it was time to get down to business. Bringggg on the spandex and running shoes! Man has Lehigh volleyball started out the spring season with a BANG. And when I say bang, I really mean OUCH…major soreness from all the workouts. We’re getting our butts kicked! But it is all worth it when we take a step back and think about our goals next fall. Our daily workouts are all aimed at being better athletes and volleyball players in August. We have lifting and conditioning three days a week with coaches and trainers, and two days of individuals where we work on position specific skills, and three nights of open gym where we play as a team. Basically, we’re a bunch of superwomen.

Looking ahead to the home stretch – November 3

Well, despite all the hocus pocus and Halloween fun, our match against Lafayette was not quite as exciting. We lost to the Leopards in four sets on Friday. In our first set, which we took off of them, we showed a lot fight and talent, but we got outplayed the following three.

As it was apparent we had things we need to work on as a team, practice was set for Saturday morning. We practiced in the beginning but then met as a team to talk through and refocus our goals. We were all disappointed in Friday night’s outcome not only because it was a loss to Lafayette but it also hampered our potential for the post season. Our goal now is to be fifth in the Patriot League at the end of the season, which will require beating everyone but American in our next four matches.

After our practice and meeting, the team went to breakfast at Billy’s Diner in North Bethlehem. I’m personally in love with this little place, and I think the team enjoyed it as well. There’s nothing like a good meal in good company J.

Following breakfast we all went to the Cross Country meet to support our fellow LU athletes. It was a beautiful morning and both the men and women placed third in the meet so it was great to see them have that success and know we were there to support them in it!

This week we will be practicing hard for American and Navy. It is family weekend! I know I personally am looking forward to seeing my parents and brothers, and the girls can’t wait to have their families here as well!

The latest from Lehigh volleyball – October 26

Sorry for the momentary leave of absence in my blog writing, but it sure has been a crazy couple of weeks for Lehigh volleyball, which I cannot wait to fill you in on.

After my last post, we were gearing up for our big match against Lafayette. Practices were intense that week because we knew that in order to beat our big rival we had to practice and play our hearts out. It’s an interesting thing with such intense rivalries like Lafayette…the game can easily become bigger than itself as you can allow yourself to get tied up with emotion to such an extent you lose your focus on all the things it takes to get the big W. After all, a win against Lafayette is just as important as a win against any other team. Our goal was to stay focused on the match at hand, play our hearts and kick some leopard booty in the meantime!

Mo, B Moose and Danielle took most of their Friday morning to surprise the team with some serious locker decorations that all had a common theme. They put pump up posters and decorations to get the girls psyched up with. The team LOVED it and gotten even more pumped to take down the leopards.

And that is JUST WHAT WE DID!!!! It was one of the most intense matches I’ve ever played in my career here. We took the first two sets off of them only to turn around and lose the next two. Then it all came down to the fifth game. We had everything on our side—the talent, the heart. We kept the crowd on the edge of their seats for that two hour match, as we played the fifth game all the way to 19-17. It was such a big win for us as a team. I think we all wished we could have taken them down in three sets but what was important is that even though the match was as close as it was, we dug deep and sustained longer than our opponents to win the match.

After the match, I think we were all on a three-day weekend high from the big win! It was pacing break so the girls all dispersed with their family and friends to enjoy the beautiful fall weekend we were blessed with for that break. I went with my mom and sister to New York for a fun weekend in the city as I believe Jess, Chelsea and Emma did as well. B and Moose decided to road trip to Boston while some of the girls went home or just hung out on campus. On Monday we all reconvened for practice that night and turned around and practiced Tuesday morning as well. After practice, however, we took a team trip to Strawberry Fields pumpkin patch and apple orchard. We had fun picking pumpkins and then took them back to Coach Ref’s house to carve. It was a fun day of bonding and carving! We had some interesting pumpkin carvings—You’ll have to check out the pictures!

The next big weekend of matches came with our trip on the road to Army and Holy Cross. Our loss against Army was frustrating but in our second set of the match we had a lot of really great moments that, reflecting back on, we knew we had to demonstrate in every set of our match against Holy Cross the next day. And our plan worked! We beat Holy Cross in three sets. It was a great win for us and the team collectively played some great volleyball that day!

It had been another intense week of practice following our weekend on the road. We prepared for our matches against Colgate and Bucknell with a mid-week match against Le Salle. We dominated them in three sets and felt really great about our play coming into this weekend. Friday night was our Dig Pink match and we had specially made warm-ups donated to us by an alumnus, Mr. Kaufman that said Lehigh Volleyball with a big pink ribbon on it. Through out the match we had a pink volleyball going around to raise money for our Adopt-A-Family that athletics does at Christmas time. We are trying to collectively raise $30,000 this year for Bethlehem families but the volleyball team is trying to raise the most money out of all the teams! So if you have any interest in donating money, which is all tax-deductible, contact me or any of the players! We’d love the help…it is such a great cause that our team is deeply dedicated to.

Ok, now that my philanthropic pitch is over, back to the volleyball! Our match against Colgate didn’t really go as planned. It was a hard loss because as a team we didn’t feel like we left it all on the floor. We knew we could have played better, or given a little more, or been more effective. And as any athlete knows, that is a hard way to lose.

We decided we would take how ticked off we were with that match into our next match against Bucknell. We ended up losing 3-1 to the Bison, but we played our hearts out. We really fought to beat them but, because of a few key things, ended up losing to them in sets that, point and energy wise, were very close. Good thing we get to see Colgate and Bucknell again because I can promise you we plan on taking them down!

This coming week will be full of hard work and intense preparation to beat Lafayette again at their house on Halloween! I promise to keep you posted with how the match goes.

Allow me to introduce myself – October 6

Hello! Welcome to the Lehigh University Volleyball blog! I’m so excited to be able to give ya’ll the behind the scenes happenings of our team. We’re quite the bunch and I can guarantee you’ll just LUV reading about it!

I would like to introduce myself before I start giving you the scoop on LUV. My name is Maxie McCoy and I’m from Dallas, Texas (so don’t be alarmed by a “ya’ll” thrown in here or there). I’m currently in my third season with Lehigh Volleyball, but I will be graduating a year early this May. I’m a journalism student and I have a column in The Brown and White, our university newspaper, every other week. However, I couldn’t be more eager to have this writing opportunity as well because it gives me the chance to communicate all the passion and fun that goes into Lehigh Volleyball.

It is hard to believe that we are already into Patriot League play with four of our first league matches completed. This past weekend was spent in Washington D.C. as we faced Navy on Friday and American on Saturday. Our match against Navy was played in a packed gym and the energy was running rampant. We played a hard match against the Midshipmen but after only being able to take a set off of them, we lost the match three sets to one. It was a tough loss because we know the kind of heart and talent we have on this young team. However, with defeat comes a lesson learned… about the level of competitiveness and fire we have to put on the court every time we step out there.

Our match following Navy was against American University, who has won the Patriot League Volleyball Championship the past seven years. We knew this team wouldn’t be easy to beat because on paper they have better statistics and bigger players. However, like the quote from the movie We are Marshall (which Mo McReynolds and I watched prior to this match for a bit of inspiration)… They don’t know our hearts. And in the third set of the match we showed them just how much heart and fight and talent we have. We decided to get a bit unpatriotic and start kicking some American booty. We had the lead in the third set a number of times, and fought all the way until the game ending score of 23-25 American. We may not have been able to take this match or even that set from American but we definitely showed the potential and capabilities this team has. After the match Coach Maurer came on the bus and told us some really positive and encouraging things the American Coach had to say about our team. He said that was one of the best fights they had seen from any Patriot League team and that we have a really strong chance at competing in the Patriot League tournament with the type of play we showed.

Navy and American better be ready for us next round.

After our matches we set out to do some DC sightseeing before returning to campus. Bethlehem may be “historic” but it sure has nothing on Washington! We visited the Washington National Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial and the Marine Corps War Memorial. It was a fun few hours of touring and picture taking and if you look closely at our pictures you can see a Barbie in most of them.  Check out Maxie’s photo gallery here.

One of our teammates was unable to travel with us this weekend because this was a time that her family needed her even more than we did. Coach and I decided that bringing along Barbie, dressed in our signature brown hair ribbons that the team all wears, a uniform with the #3 and a LUV button, would be a great way to keep the team from feeling the absence of one of our key players! And boy did we all have fun putting her in pictures next to Abe, bringing her into our huddles and standing her right next to the Washington Monument.

We have a big week of matches coming up with NJIT on Tuesday and LAFAYETTE on Friday. For anyone who doesn’t know, Lafayette is our biggest rival of the season and we’re going to be working hard all week in Grace Hall (our gym) to prepare for the Leopards. It’s going to be a big match!!!

I’ll post soon following our upcoming matches!
